Hammerfest, widely considered the world’s northernmost city, sits 500 km north of the Arctic Circle—farther north than all of Iceland.
There are no crowds here, only pristine Arctic wilderness, with the chill of the Arctic Ocean riding every breeze. This is a land of midnight sun and polar night: in summer the sun never sets at midnight, and in winter the stars shine around the clock while the aurora dances often.
Nearby Repparfjord offers white-sand beaches, rustic cabins, and a winding coastal road, with few fellow hikers on the trail.
In town, the UNESCO World Heritage Meridian Column stands as a tribute to 19th-century efforts to measure Earth’s circumference. Visit the Royal and Ancient Polar Bear Society to receive a world’s northernmost membership card and explore Arctic hunting culture. Wild reindeer often roam the roadside—this is traditional Sami herding country. Climb to the city viewpoint for sweeping views of colorful cabins, the fjord, and the Arctic Ocean.
May–late July is ideal for midnight-sun hikes, and November–February is peak aurora season.
To get there, fly to Tromso, then take a nonstop flight to Hammerfest, or drive yourself (8-hour drive).
Stay in a fjordside cabin with a sauna.
