Niger is beautiful, but I don't recommend visiting in September–October. Here's the honest truth!

Mali (Mali) 🇲🇱: World-Class Heritage and Current Travel Warnings
Titanaom
Niger 🇳🇪 Niger is perfect for those who love deserts, old cities, and Tuareg culture. Highlights include Agadez, the Aïr Mountains, and the Ténéré Desert. However, as of August 28, 2026, it's not advisable to plan a trip to Niger yet, as the FCDO (Football Club of Thailand) has advised against all travel to Niger, and the US has classified it as Level 4 due to the risk of terrorism, kidnapping, crime, and unrest.
📅 Itinerary — For the future when the situation improves
Day 1: Agadez 🕌
Explore the old town Day 1: Visit the earthen mosque and local market. Agadez is an important historical town on the Sahara caravan route and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2013.
Day 2: Aïr Mountains ⛰️
Depart with a 4x4 vehicle and local guide to see the rock formations, oases, and Tuareg cultural areas.
Day 3: Ténéré Desert 🏜️
Explore the Sahara sand dunes and vast landscapes. The Aïr and Ténéré Natural Reserves are a World Heritage Site, but are currently on the list of World Heritage Sites in danger.
🏨 Recommended Accommodation
Currently, booking hotels for your trip is not recommended. If the situation returns to normal, consider staying in Agadez and using an expedition company that provides a 4x4 vehicle, guide, water, fuel, and a desert camp.
🍴 Food to Try
Dambou — Couscous (grain and vegetable)
Tchaka — Grain-based food
Roasted lamb
Millet Porridge and Sahel sweet tea
📌 Tips
The main point now is… Travel is still not advisable. Even Niamey poses a risk of kidnapping and terrorism, and the airport only recently reopened after heavy gunfire near it in June 2026.
Regarding visas, generally, foreigners need a Niger visa before entering the country, unless exempted. The Nigerien Ministry of Foreign Affairs states that applications are usually submitted through the embassy or consulate responsible for the country of residence, with a processing time of approximately 15 days.
In summary: Niger has stunning landscapes, especially Agadez, Aïr, and Ténéré, but for 2026, keep it on your list for now. Wait until the situation is safer before planning your trip. 🇳🇪🏜️
