Pingyao ancient city is such a cool place! I made a stop here traveling from Beijing to Xi'an and it was absolutely worth it. I love the beauty of these old buildings. In my opinion it looks especially stunning at night. When most of the stores close, it gets pretty quiet and empty, perfect for taking pictures. Make sure you book a room in one of the courtyard hotels, they are very charming. I think just staying here for one or two nights is enough to see most of the places though and you can easily walk around the area as it's not that big. The town is also car free.
