Sunset Crater

I hiked the O'Leary Peak Trail. Fantastic hike up a volcano. You're going uphill for 5 miles, but it's not especially steep.

The loop road US89 provides access to both craters and sunset (south section) and Wupatki ruins (north section) which can be easily reached from flagstaff or the Grand Canyon. The scenery seen from the room changes dramatically. The sunset crater is very large and many other smaller volcanic cones are also visible nearby. There it is easy to pass the rugged lava along both sides of the trail. It is quite surprising that the lava in the middle and the other imagined block of volcanic crater and sunset cone from which it collapsed 1,000 years ago! This is not a lava flowing as an explosion of lava. There is a more challenging vertical track with a conical standard room, and great views. The visitor center has a wooden building which is a pretty interesting exhibit and forest. The descriptive signs are also great. A fee ($20.00 per car) covers both places. Plan to spend a day visiting these two places, especially if you do some walking trails. The drive loops from one end to the other absolutely beautiful: the ever-changing scenery is also unforgettable.
