The duty of the officers and soldiers that guarded the gate in Dynastic Korea was to safeguard the safety of the King in the palace. The gate keepers systematically opened and closed Gwanghwamun according to a predetermined established schedule. Today, in Gwanghwamun square before Gyeongbokgung Palace, the official gatekeeper changing ceremony has been recreated. In addition to military uniforms, weapons, and various decorations of the Joseon period, there are byzantine and rigorous changing of the guard ceremonies and etc., which are all recreated in Gyeongbokgung Palace. When we went to Gwanghwamun it had just turned 10 o’clock. Once we emerged from the subway station loud drumming sounds were immediately audible, following the sound we were able to arrive at Gyeongbokgung, where at that time there was already a crowd of onlookers behind the security line, watching a magnificent sight. Gyeongbokgung Palace, which is the Forbidden City of Korea, has a history that is longer than 600 years. There are 3 changing of the guard ceremonies that are performed each day in Gwanghwamun that is in front of Gyeongbokgung Palace, at: 10:00, 13:00, and 15:00, each ceremony lasts about 20 minutes. The changing of the guard ceremony at Gyeongbokgung Palace is an activity that popularizes traditional court culture.
