The Eski Monastery is an ancient cave monastery, about 10 kilometers east of Nidai City, was discovered in 1963. Because the early Christians belonged to heretics in Turkey, they had to hide here in order to avoid persecution. In the towering main church, there are gorgeous Byzantine frescoes from the 7th to 11th centuries AD. In the picture of the Virgin and Child in the apse, Mary has a tall figure with a Mona Lisa smile. It is said that this is the only surviving statue of the smiling Virgin.

Several rock cave churches and cave monasteries have been discovered in Kabadoshia, Turkey. The Eski Monastery is one of the ancient cave monasteries. Early Christians had to walk into the wilderness to build these monasteries in order to avoid persecution.
It is composed of a series of grotto churches and monks' residences. Here is an ancient town. The hiking route is from the foot of the mountain to the cathedral near the top. Along the way, you can visit a huge kitchen and several stables. The double-storey cathedral architecture is well-preserved. Although it is not magnificent, it was not easy to use simple tools to dig such large grottoes with limited manpower.
