Ras Al Khaimah Transportation

How to Get There

Ras Al Khaimah (RAK) is accessible by air, bus, and private car, offering flexibility depending on your origin and preference.

By Plane:

Ras Al Khaimah International Airport (RKT): This is the closest airport, located approximately 18 kilometers from Ras Al Khaimah city center. It primarily serves flights from specific international destinations.

Dubai International Airport (DXB): As a major international hub, DXB is a common entry point for travelers heading to RAK. It's about a 45-60 minute drive to Ras Al Khaimah, depending on traffic. Many airlines fly into DXB from around the world.

Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC): Located in Dubai South, DWC is another option, though a bit further than DXB, roughly a 75-90-minute drive. It's often used by budget airlines.

Sharjah International Airport (SHJ): A popular hub for budget airlines, SHJ is also a viable option, approximately a 45-60-minute drive from RAK.

Transfers from Airports:

Taxis: Readily available at all airports. A taxi from DXB or SHJ to RAK will likely cost a few hundred dirhams.

Ride-Hailing Apps: Uber and Careem operate from DXB and SHJ and can be booked via their apps.

Private Transfers/Shuttles: Many hotels in RAK offer airport shuttle services, often for a fee, which can be pre-booked. Various private transfer companies also provide services.

Rental Cars: Car rental counters are available at all UAE international airports, offering the most flexibility for exploring RAK and beyond.

By Bus:

Inter-emirate Bus Services: The Ras Al Khaimah Public Transport Authority (RAKTA) operates inter-emirate bus services connecting RAK with other emirates, including Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, and Umm Al Quwain.

Look for routes from major bus stations in Dubai (like Union Square Bus Station or Rashidiya Bus Station) or Sharjah to Ras Al Khaimah Bus Station. Fares are pretty affordable, typically ranging from AED 15-30 for a one-way trip between RAK and Dubai/Sharjah. You can usually pay with cash directly to the bus driver or at ticket counters at major bus stations. Some inter-emirate buses in Dubai may require a Nol card (Dubai's public transport card) to board from the Dubai side.

By Car:

Driving from other Emirates: Ras Al Khaimah is easily accessible by major highways (E311 and E611) from Dubai and other northern emirates. The drive is straightforward and well signposted. Approximately 45-60 minutes from Dubai, depending on traffic and starting point.

Local Transportation

Ras Al Khaimah's public transportation network is more modest than Dubai or Abu Dhabi, but still provides useful options for travelers, primarily through taxis and local buses.

RAK Public Buses: RAKTA operates a network of public buses within the emirate, covering key areas including Ras Al Khaimah City, Al Hamra, Jazeera Al Hamra, and some tourist attractions. Fares are very affordable, typically just a few dirhams per trip, with prices varying based on distance. You can pay for your fare directly on the bus, often using cash.

RAK City Taxis:  Taxis are abundant throughout Ras Al Khaimah, especially in the city center, near hotels, malls, and tourist attractions. They are easy to spot (typically cream-colored with a green roof). You can hail taxis on the street or find them at designated stands. You can also book a taxi by calling the RAKTA hotline or using the "RAKTA Taxi" app.

Ride-Hailing Apps (Careem): Careem is widely used in RAK, offering a convenient way to book rides through your smartphone. Uber's presence in RAK is more limited than in Dubai or Abu Dhabi.

Car Rental: Given the more spread-out nature of some attractions (like Jebel Jais) and the less extensive public transport network compared to larger cities, renting a car is often the most convenient option for travelers who want to explore independently. Car rental agencies are available at RAK International Airport, Dubai airports, and within Ras Al Khaimah city.
