Hoan Kiem Lake is a 12 ha fresh water lake located in the historical center of Hanoi, also known as Sword Lake. The banks of the lake are popular for the locals to do morning exercise, since the lake is not so big, visitors tend to walk around this peaceful and beautiful lake, especially on the weekend. In the middle of the lake is a small island with a small stone pagoda, but you cannot go there, because there are no bridges or boats to the island. The Ly Thai To statue which is a large bronze sculpture of the founder of the Ly dynasty of Vietnam was erected in 2004. There are people playing games, children riding motorized cars, people taking beautiful photoshoots, vendors selling snacks, souvenirs, drawing pictures and many more for you to discover.

Staying in the Old Quarters near the Hoàn Kiếm Lake was an immaculate decision with so many things going on over the weekends! All the attractions, restaurants, cafes and night market were in walking distance. My parents do not have the fastest walk, enjoys the slow strolls along the streets for food hunt while immersing themselves in the local culture. When you are visiting the Old Quarters in Hanoi, don't forget to drop by the Hoan Kiem Lake also called the sword Lake or Lake of the returned sword. Not sure of the story here but basically jts a Lake that is smack right in the middle of the Old Quarters. The Lake is an attraction especially if you follow tour groups and they will tell you about the beauty and architecture, history and people that surrounds this Lake. Do becareful of con artists here that takes money from you to tell you that the Lake require an entrance fee, its free! The only entrance fee require is the tickets into the pagoda and temples.
