Hakodate is an important port city in the southwestern part of Hokkaido. From the Seikan Tunnel to the south, you can reach Honshu Island's Aomori Prefecture. Mount Hakodate is located in downtown Hakodate. Visitors can take a cable car to the observation deck at the top of the mountain, which is considered the best place to view the Hakodate nightscape and Tsugaru Strait. It is a must-see attraction for visitors to Hakodate. Although small in size, the city of Hakodate at night resembles a scattering of shimmering jewels. It is included among Japan's three best night views, alongside the views from Nagasaki's Mount Inansa and Kobe's Mount Rokko. The observation deck also encompasses a restaurant and gift shop, and visitors can enjoy the spectacular night views while dining in the restaurant.
The Goryokaku Tower is located near the entrance to the southwestern edge of Goryokaku Park. It overlooks the star-shaped city of Goryokaku Park and offers a view of the Hakodate and Tsugaru Straits in the distance. There is also an exhibition hall, gift shop and restaurant introducing the history of Goryokaku. The Goryokaku Tower is not only a great place to see the Goryokaku Park, but also to see different landscape changes throughout the year.
Goryokaku Park is a star fortress city built in the Edo period. It is a castle built in Japan by Western architecture. The castle that has witnessed history now has only the outer walls of the city, and the interior has been converted into a city park. There is a boxhouse in the park, which collects the weapons used in the war and the warrior suits stained with blood. There is also a Goryokaku Tower outside the park. The tower can overlook the whole picture of the Goryokaku Park. The shape of the pentagonal star is clearly visible.
Hakodate Morning Market is home to the most delicious food in Hakodate, with cuttlefish being the city's specialty. Noodles, ice cream, and even chocolate made from cuttlefish are also a real treat! Visitors here can enjoy the fresh seafood on offer, or if you feel really courageous, why not try sea urchin sashimi? Simply eat it on the spot, or pick a cuttlefish from one of the tanks and ask the shop keeper to whip up some sashimi to experience truly fresh seafood.
