What people are saying:

There are many exciting things in Hamburg, and this fantastic tunnel is at the top of the list. Hamburg made me appreciate the beauty of industry and this stretch of tiled and lit road really is beautiful. Open 24/7 it's probably best enjoyed late at night.

    Beeindruckend

Now this is one impressive tunnel and so immaculately kept. Look up at the tunnel walls as you walk the 426 metre technical sensation and the ornate glazed terracotta marine life come towards you. The...

    A piece of history

I had this on my to visit list, the descend is fun in the old elevator. The tiling and architecture is fabulous but alas it is a bit of a bridge to nowhere now with nothing much on the other side.

    Must see free attraction!

A hundred-year-old tunnel with a very nice aesthetic. Gives some insight into the logistics of the beginning of the 20th century.

Additional Information

Introduction

Built in 1907-11, the oldest of the Elbe Tunnels links the district of St Pauli with the island of Steinwerder. The twin tunnel is 426m long and runs just 6m below the river. Built for traffic, cyclists and pedestrians, the tunnel is decorated with ornaments and tiles and can only be reached by lift or down the staircase. The interesting dome-shaped entrance hall on the north side was built by Ludwig Raabe and Otto Wohlecke. Due to increasing amounts of traffic, even the New Elbe Tunnel has been extended an extra lane.
