About Honghe

The Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture is located in southern Yunnan. The prefecture is bordered by Kunming on the north and Vietnam on the south. The prefecture is bisected by the Tropic of Cancer and is endowed with beautiful south Asian tropical scenery and colorful local folk flavor and culture, as well as famous historical sites set amidst the unique scenery. The Honghe Hani Rice Terraces are located on the southern slopes of the Ailao Mountains in Yunnan province. They were constructed over generations by the local Hani people. There are four major scenic spots in the area: Bada, Laohuzui ('tiger mouth'), Duoyishu, and Jingkou Village. The rice terraces look particularly beautiful at sunrise and sunset. The frequent early morning mist that envelops the terraces creates a surreal landscape. Visitors can also learn about the Hani people's unique culture.

The ancient city of Jianshui is listed as a National Historical and Cultural City. It has been in existence for twelve centuries. The ancient buildings in the city are beautiful and well preserved. The Temple of Literature, Zhu's Garden and the School of Examinations in the ancient city all reflect Confucius’s ethos of the ancient city of Jianshui. More than fifty ancient buildings have been preserved to date, which won Jianshui the moniker the “Ancient Architecture Museum” and the “House Museum.”

The Zhu Family Garden is located on Hanlin Street in Jianshui County. It was a home and ancestral temple built by the Zhu Weiqing brothers in the waning years of the Qing Dynasty. Within the park, the ancestral hall, temple, living quarters and gardens are all magnificent and majestic. Visitors to the site can take the opportunity to learn about the architectural style of the southwestern residential gardens. The entirety of the Zhu Family Garden is built on a south-to-north axis and, for Jianshui, is a typical and classical combination of residential buildings and gardens. The buildings are, of course, laid out in a specific order. In the southeast corner of the Zhu Family Garden stands a Huaiyuan Hall with an exhibition on the Century-Long Rise and Fall of the Zhu Family.

The Jianshui Excursion Train departs from Lin'an in Yunnan Province. The train station and train carriages are decorated in a historical style from the Nationalist era. The beautiful scenery changes with the seasons. In spring, visitors can enjoy fields of yellow canola flowers, while in summer rice seedlings erupt into a sea of green. The rice is harvested in autumn, while winter is the best time to view the rice paddies. The train stops at Shuanglong Bridge and Xianghui Bridge, which afford magnificent views over the surrounding area.
