About Hongtong

Hongtong County is situated in the southern part of Shanxi Province, facing the northernmost part of the Linfen Basin. It has the largest population of any county in Shanxi Province and is one of the birthplaces of the Chinese people’s ancient civilization. Hongtong County has a long history and resplendent culture. The Nüwa Tomb in Hongtong County’s Hou Village is said to be the final resting place of the great ancestor, Nüwa, who used stones to patch the sky. Hongtong County’s Dahuai Shu Memorial Garden is known both at home and abroad as a memorial to the migrants of the Ming dynasty. It is a sacred site for millions of immigrant descendants searching for their ancestral roots. The nearby Guangsheng Temple has a long history and is well-known for its magnificent size. There are many famous sites and longstanding folk customs in Hongtong County. The county is one of the most well-known in all of China.

Hongdong Dahuaishu Ancestor Memorial Garden is a scenic area designed around ancestral offering and "root-seeking" in China. In the second year of the Warlord Era, after returning to the home village of Hongdong Jia Village from a political career in Shandong Province, Jing Daqi crowdfunded to build a tablet pavilion and a tea room. Six hundred years have passed, and the first and second generations of the ancient Chinese Scholar Tree from the Han Dynasty have ceased to exist. Only the third generation trees remain, full of vitality with flourishing leaves.

Historical Site
Susan Prison is the only prison left in the Ming Dynasty. It is famous for the false imprisonment of Susan (Yu Tang Chun), a famous prostitute in Beijing, and the spread of the Ming drama, Yu Tang Chun (The Story Of Susan). Each cell in the prison only has 4 square meters, dark and damp, without sunshine all day long. There is a collection of laws of the Ming Dynasty and instruments of torture exhibited in the prison along with the items for unjust accusation against Susan. Susan was once kept in a condemned cell in the west side. The cell wall is 1.7 meters thick and filled with quicksand, to prevent the condemned prisoners to escape by digging the wall.

Ancient Pagoda
Feihong Tower is located in Guangsheng Temple in Hongtong County. It got its name from its colorful tower body which looks like a rainbow. Feihong Tower was built during the Han Dynasty, and was Ashoka Tower formerly. The current tower was built in the 11th Year of Zhengde (1516) of Ming Dynasty. The construction took 12 years and was not completed until the 6th Year of Jiajing (1527). It is an extremely large, well-preserved glass tower in China.
