About Zhang Hall

Zhang Hall is one of the few Ming Dynasty buildings left in Zhouzhuang Ancient Town. It was originally known as Yishun Hall. It was said to have been built by Xu Da’s younger brother Xu Xuan. In the early Qing Dynasty, it was transferred to the Zhang clan and and renamed as Yuyan Hall, but also commonly known as Zhang Hall. Zhang Hall was an official's residence with its own garden and was divided into the entrance hall, the carriage hall, the main Yuyan Hall, the lobby building, the chess room and the study room. There is also a side hall on the east side of the main hall. The side hall was very narrow and could only be passed by one person at a time. In ancien t times, when there were no honored guests, the main door would not be opened, and the family would use this side hall to go in and out of the building.

Zhang Hall is located at the side of Zhouzhuang Shuangqiao. The most famous house is "the sedan chair walks in front of the door and the boat passes through the house". It is a magnificent Ming Dynasty building along the river. The six elements of Jiangnan gardens - water, rockery, flowers, trees, pavilions, pavilions and furniture can be seen in the back garden of Zhang Hall.

Zhouzhuang Zhang Hall is one of the few Ming Dynasty buildings remaining in Zhouzhuang Town, which is a key cultural relic protection unit in China. Zhang Hall, formerly known as Yishuntang Hall, is said to have been built by Xu Kui, the descendant of Xu Da, the founding General of Zhongshan Kingdom, during the orthodox years of the Ming Dynasty. In the early Qing Dynasty, it was sold to Zhang's family and renamed Yuyantang, commonly known as Zhang Hall. As the residence of a wealthy family, Zhang Hall has gone through more than 500 years of vicissitudes, but its style is still the same.

Zhouzhuang, known as "the first water town in the south of the Yangtze River", is a typical old town in the south of the Yangtze River with small bridges and flowing families. Zhang Hall is a famous scenic spot in Zhouzhuang. The couplet "the sedan chair advances through the door and the boat passes through the home" is the true portrayal of Zhang Hall. Obviously, this is the heritage of the rich merchants surnamed Zhang in the Ming Dynasty. Visitors to Zhouzhuang usually come to Zhang Hall to have a look. It's worth seeing.

Zhang Hall in Zhouzhuang Ancient Town is the courtyard of a large family in ancient times. It is not very big. Although sparrows are small and have all five internal organs, they are ancient and fragrant, and have their own ecology. Included in Zhouzhuang gate tickets, afternoon strolls are also very pleasant.

Zhang Hall is also called Yuyan Hall, which is decorated with Ming-style mahogany furniture and decorated with lanterns. Paintings and calligraphy are hanging on the walls, especially the pair of couplets. The upper couplet is "the sedan car moves forward from the door" and the lower couplet is "the boat passes through its own home". The couplet describes the architectural features of Zhang Hall very appropriately.
