Longyou County is located in western Zhejiang Province in the center of the Jinqu Basin. It is an important transport hub linking eastern and central Zhejiang to the bordering provinces of Jiangxi, Anhui, and Fujian. Here you will find the famous Longyou Caves, an enormous complex of sandstone caverns. Seven of the caverns are dug closely together, neatly arranged to form the shape of the seven stars of the Big Dipper. Mysterious carved figures adorn the rock walls of the caverns. You can also visit the picturesque Longyou Residential Court and Quzhou Xiaonanhai (衢州小南海 - “Quzhou Little South Sea”) or raft the Longyou Grand Canyon (龙游大峡谷).
The Longyou Caves are series of large artificial sandstone caverns that were constructed over 1000 years ago. With 24 caves spread over an area of 1 square kilometer, the caves are one of China's best examples of ancient underground constructions. A number of the caves are open to visitors.
Located on Jiming Mountain, Longyou Residential Court is an Anhui-style building from the period of the Ming and Qing dynasties. The Longyou Group were famous merchants during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Longyou Residential Court is composed of dozens of ancient buildings such as Gong Residential Building, Yu Residential Building and Wang Residential Building, in which some cultural relics are preserved. These buildings showcase the wisdom and labor of the ancient people of Longyou and reflect the history of Longyou Merchant Group.
Quzhou Little South Sea is on Phoenix Mountain, just north of Qujiang, the county town. It is at the junction of Qujiang and Lingshan River. The environment of Little South Sea is quiet. The buildings were built unevenly along the mountain, and the scenery is beautiful. The green mountains juxtaposed against the water are breathtaking. Beautiful mountains, rivers, caves and temples combine to form a scenic area with natural and cultural landscapes. It is a great place for sightseeing, nostalgia and religious pilgrimage.
