This museum has a small permanent collection of European paintings. Other galleries have modern art. The building is undergoing some form of facade renovation, although it is covered and difficult to see. All open galleries are accessible through the central courtyard. You can spend two hours here and see it all. The museum is free to enter and the museum parking is $7 and is effective for 3 hours.

When you think of museums in Los Angeles, you tend to ignore the Hammer Museum, the best place to spend a few hours. The gallery is located around an open-air courtyard, and Audrey is a fairly new restaurant. On Thursday night in July they co-organized a free concert with KCRW and the gallery was open until 9pm which was definitely fun. The exhibits were interesting and although the current exhibits were strange, the atmosphere was relaxing and calm.

Amand Hammer is a collector of beautiful art, but there are only 2 rooms with his collection. In my opinion, most of the works offered by the museum are not very good art, but are created by angry young men and women, making some social commentary. If I wanted to read those, I could take out my computer. In the future, I would go to the Minneapolis Art Museum or the Boston Art Museum. Both are far better than anything we saw in Los Angeles
I really enjoy their "disappear here' series! Went here for 2 of the 4 weeks and had a blast. It's free but the drawback is that it gets CRAZY packed and the lines for alcohol = intensely long + expensive. pros and cons right? Haven't been to check out the exhibits but it's awesome to me that they do free events with REAL headliners (tokimonsta, poolside, stones throw fam, etc)
What do you see when you look into the tunnel like art piece. Does it make you want to step inside or crawl through. It does give that thought to me. I just want to sit in this tunnel and see what people see or let others see me while looking through one side of it. It is a tool on your eyes, either letting you look past what's there or becoming part of it if you were to step inside the space. It could be just a tunnel and nothing more. This is just the description I think of when I see this picture. The rest of the museum is also great and you should go inside because it's free.
Excellent gallery and cultural center that has a permanent collection and hosts temporary special exhibits of contemporary art. Very edgy and cool place to be - on my list of places to check out when I'm in LA!
Hammer museum seems to always host super awesome events. I attended at Made in LA free concert that had deep house legends Marques Wyatt and Doc Martin spinning. They literally turned that outdoor courtyard into a dance party. Definitely need to check out the Hammer more often!
One of the nicer museums in Los Angeles, with constant updates to exhibits and installations; whether historical or modern contemporary. It's a stones throw from UCLA and helps demarcate the Westwood village. Their private collection of artworks holds a lot of classical American art. If you're hungry, I suggest going to Damon & Pythias:Food for the Gods, which is a few blocks north, west. They have the best garlic curly fries.
