The Hailuogou Glacier is the lowest modern maritime glaci in Asia and one of the most accessible glaciers in the world. It takes only 4 hours to drive to Chengdu. Upon arrival, visitors can take the cableway to the top of the glacier and watch the Gongga Mountain, the king of Lushan. In addition to the glacier, Hailuogou has a magnificent red rock beach. Hailuogou Today's glaciers are formed by snowflakes that landed many years ago. Their bodies are snow for centuries, or thousands of years, sometimes even millions of years ago. These snowflakes fall on the cold mountains, only a small amount of melting or not melting at all, which has accumulated tremendous depth after many years or centuries. As the annual snowflake accumulates on the surface, evaporation and melting cause the snow to slowly lose its feathery tip and become tiny ice particles. When the new snow falls on the old surface, it also becomes ice. Thus, the snow cover layer and the ice grain layer are stacked up to such a large thickness that the weight of the upper layer is compressed compared to the lower layer. Under the influence of time and pressure, many small ice particles combine to become larger crystals, and finally merge into larger and stronger ice cubes than the underlying crystals.
