Introduction
Fort Santiago is located on the Pasig River where it was constructed in 1590 as a defense against pirates. It is part of the Intramuros section of Manila. Fort Santiago was named as the Shrine of Freedom in 1950. The shrine includes bronze footprints that mark his final steps from the cell to the place where he was executed. fort santiago is the actual prison cell where our National Hero Dr. Jose Rizal was imprisoned before his execution. Being there will remind you of how nationalism lives in the heart of our historical heroes
A lot of history here including World War 2 and the trial and execution of Rezil. He is revered in this country. There is a nice Rezil museum inside. There are good views of the river from the fortress walls.
