Photos of Government House

The Victorian Government Governor's House was completed in 1876 and designed by William Wardell. During the First World War, the House Ballroom was used by the Red Cross to store and distribute war supplies. During the Great Depression (1931-1934), it was the Melbourne Girls' School, where the ballroom and parlour were classrooms for students until 1933. In May 1934, it was restored as a government office until now. It is open to citizens and tourists every year on National Day (January 26).
