About Mianxian

Mian County is located in southern Shaanxi Province, on the western end of the Hanzhong Basin. It is under the administration of Hanzhong City. The county accumulated a lot of history and culture through the two Han dynasties and Three Kingdoms era. This long history has left behind many important cultural sites. The Neolithic archaeological site here is quite large and productive, a rare source of such cultural remains in the Hanzhong region. Mian County also boasts the Wuhou Tomb, the tomb of one of China’s historically preeminent politicians and military leaders, Zhuge Liang (181-234), who was also prime minister of the Shu Han kingdom during the Three Kingdoms Period. The Wuhou Temple is also China’s earliest built for Zhu and the only one built by imperial edict. Other county attractions include the marvelously constructed Bao River plank road (褒河栈道).

Wuhou Temple is a key cultural relics protection unit in Shaanxi Province, a national 3A-level tourist scenic spot, and faces the Wuhou Tomb across the Han River. Wuhou Temple was built in the sixth year of Jinghan Jingyao (AD 263). Liuchan announced the building of the Temple. The site was chosen to be in Wuhouping, beneath Dingjun Mountain. It is close to the tomb and integrates ancient architecture, gardens and paintings. It is a thousand-year-old ancient temple representing the traditional architectural style of Southern Shaanxi.

Located at the foot of Dingjun Mountain, Wuhou Tomb is the tomb of Zhuge Liang, the prime minister of the Shu Kingdom in the Three Kingdoms period. The tomb is surrounded by brick walls, with a small pavilion in front of it, and a stone tablet stands in the pavilion carved with the words "The Tomb of Marquis Zhuge Liang." Inside the court, there are numerous poems that eulogizing Zhuge Liang from past dynasties, as well as renovated temples and stone tablets carved with verses. In the court, people can see a Zhuge Liang statue sitting upright, with Guan Xing and Zhang Bao on both sides, who were believed to be the descendants of Guan Yu and Zhang Fei.

Zhuge Ancient Town is based around Zhuge Liang's Eight Diagrams layout concept, with a water street and a dry street as the main street, symbolizing the Yin and Yang of the Eight Diagrams. It has a strong culture dating from the Three Kingdoms Period. There is plenty of entertainment, such as historical sites, live performances and folk catering. It consists of six sections, including Wuhou Temple, Ma Chao Tomb and the live performance "Memorial on Sending Out the Troops."

Dingjun Mountain is a branch mountain of the Bashan Mountain Range. The Wuhou Tombs are located at its foot. This is the site of an ancient battlefield where the Shu fought against the Wei during the Three Kingdoms Period. It has been famous throughout history. Zhuge Liang once commanded his army here. When he passed away, he was buried beneath this mountain. The Dingjun Mountain road is quite dangerous. The Dingjun Mountain has twelve consecutive peaks one after another and stretches more than ten kilometers from the west to the east. It is like a dragon playing with beads on a string so it is sometimes called by the beautiful moniker “a dozen beads in the mountains."
