Miyakojima is the main island in the Miyako Island Archipelago. It is located in the Pacific Ocean to the southwest of Okinawa Island in Okinawa Prefecture. The island is formed by rising coral reefs, and, as a result the terrain on the island is generally fairly low. Clear ocean waters provide a great venue for ocean sports such as scuba diving. Triathlons are held here every year during the early summer. The professional baseball camp in the spring is also very famous. Famous tourist spots on the island include Higashi-hennazaki, Sunayama Beach, Yonaha Maehama Beach, Ueno German Culture Village, Miyakojima Sea Treasure Museum, and Miyako Traditional Craft Research Center.
