Melbourne General Cemetery

It’s usually desolate and socially distancing itself from the crowds in the nearby park. Some celebrities are here to show what happens to us all eventually. The cemetery opened in 1853 and is located 2 km north of the Central Business District (CBD) in Carlton, south of the city, covering 43 hectares. Since the opening, about 1 million people have been buried, including four prime ministers (the graveyard is the headstone of Prime Minister Harold Holt) and a number of other places of significance. Although you may not be the first place to visit, if you are interested in history, it is worth a visit.

There is a lot of culture and history to watch. The map at the gate shows where some of the more interesting graves are. These include the European pioneer tombs dating back to around 1870, and some of the famous Victorian tombs later on. The region’s Aboriginal leader, Deremut, is also here.
