What people are saying:

Since Showa 18, that is, since 1943, Mt. Usu, located on the shore of Lake Toya, has undergone many volcanic activities, which caused the bottom layer to bulge and form a new mountain named Showa Shinzan. This is one of the two active volcanoes of Lake Toya. The white smoke emitted from the mountain is the source of the clouds and mist of Lake Toya. This mountain is located on the south bank of Lake Toya. The bay to the south is the Pacific Ocean and Lake Toya is to the north. There are ranches at the foot of the mountain to raise bears, which are roughly similar to Noboribetsu Bear Ranch, but it’s closer to the people. Bears are better bred, and they will be eaten by tourists...

Such a pity. Leave the bears alone

    Do not visit

Do not visit this place if concern for animal welfare plays any part in your make up as a human being. The bears are penned into small dirty concrete yards with little to entertain them and they are c...

    Do not go!

I wish I had checked trip advisor before going. This place is the worst thing I have ever seen. Just truly awful! Do not give them your money. Terrible to see bears kept like this. Animal abuse.

Additional Information

The Showa Shinzan Bear Ranch is located on the Showa New Mountain. The Showa Johor Bahru is an active volcano that erupted in the early years of the Showa era. It is classified as a rare rock-type volcano in the world, and geothermal white smoke can still be seen in the reddish-brown mountains. There are about 100 purebred Hokkaido brown bears in the Showa New Mountain Bear Ranch. The ranch is large, and the brown bears are divided into several relatively fixed areas according to their age groups. If the visitor wants to get close to the lovely brown bear, you can go to the "cage" specially set in the brown bear territory to experience it.
