In all the years that I have been dining out and especially in Japanese restaurants due to my long time affiliation as a past owner in a Japanese restaurant group, I have never ever experienced such unacceptable and horrendous service. Now granted, I don't have high expectations that such service in this segment should be extremely friendly and outgoing. It is typically not the culture for that to happen but I do expect a reasonable level of civility and efficient service. That being said, the service was far from even that as it was just simply atrocious! As we entered the restaurant, the Japanese man behind the sushi bar was gracious in his greeting. Perhaps she was to be off that day as we all sensed a obvious degree of tension between the chef and the waitress. How she didn't even really address us, to how she literally just dropped the menus in front of us to taking our order and on and on.....it was not pleasant. If we weren't so intent on having Japanese food that day for lunch, I would have left to find another restaurant that would show us that they wished for us to dine in their place. Plus, there weren't that many restaurants in a district that I'm not as familiar with. Thus, it was more of a grin and bear it situation. I could elaborate even more about the deficiencies regarding the service but don't want to write a book about it. As for the food, once we had finally received it, it was actually of very good flavor and quality. The portions were on the small side and not that we expected a large amount of food, but it was small even by Japanese restaurant standards in this city. Never once did she come by to see how we were doing or if needed anything else. If we needed something, we had to make quite an effort to get her attention. A celebrated chef with many successful units in New York once wrote that his customers
