A sushi restaurant, the environment is relatively ordinary, there are only a few seats at the door, the sushi inside is basically sushi rolls, the taste is average, the salad with it is good, everyone buys it looks like it.
The Japanese food in this restaurant is good. I think both sushi and sashimi are worth tasting. Sake is also very good. The environment of the restaurant is also very good, fresh and elegant. The service is also good.
We had been to several places while on Kauai, but we weren't satisfied. We immediately went to TripAdvisor and the first place recommended was Makai Sushi. This "hole in the wall" place is absolutely the bests sushi on the island.
Sister loves seafood, and said the gorilla bowl is the best poke she's had during our stay in Hawaii. The unagi and California rolls were also good. Note that the California rolls have real crab. Was great to chat with the staff while we ate.
One member of our family MUST eat gluten-free. Why most Asian food can be prepared gluten-free, one must always watch out for the soy sauce which is usually made from wheat. We visited Makai's twice (it was that good). The two chefs we worked with both demonstrated a clear understanding of how to safely prepare a fabulous sushi roll with no risk of cross-contamination from gluten. The rolls are fresh and fabulous. We had both spicy Ahi tuna and California rolls. We highly recommend a quick stop to visit Matt at Makai. You will not regret it. It is inside a small grocery store. There really is no seating. Be prepared to get it to go.
I read the reviews but - decided to go with the rolls instead of the bowl. I just wanted some rolls. My wife doesn't like sushi - and this was another occasion where I had to fend for myself while she was taking a nap. It is in a strange location - I guess. I knew what to expect - because I read the reviews before going. I certainly wouldn't have known is was there without reading about it. It's not even a large market (seems more of a local market - with some cool fish and other items not in other markets around that area). There were a few people eating at the small counter. I just ordered the two different rolls. I was probably more than I should have ordered - but I finished all of it when I got back to the room. Very happily full at the end. Quality of the food was excellent. Value is outstanding. It seems "expensive" for a roll - until you look at the size of it. Only aspect that didn't appeal to me was a little more dressing on the top - mayo sort of stuff - than I like. My fault - I'm sure I could have said something and they would have been happy to accommodate. But - first time here so I just ordered and let them make what they make. I would definitely return. Didn't have time - short vacation and - as I said - the "sushi" thing is a solo venture when my wife isn't around typically. But the value is good and I'd probably try their "famous" poke bowl next time. Then again - I really enjoyed the rolls. Maybe one roll and a bowl. I'd be stuffed.
The daily food is the best I have had in my travels in the past few days, especially the sushi of his family, the salmon is really very fragrant, the taste is quite good, plus the small but leisurely environment and exquisite service is really a very good meal testing
