The South Shaolin Temple Site is located on Jiulian Mountain's Linshan Village in Putian City. According to legend, it is said that after the thirteenth monastic leader of the Henan Songshan Shaolin Temple helped Emperor Taizong reunify China, Emperoro Taziong of Tang gave them the title of "Monastic Warriors" and allowed them to establish ten sub-districts throughout the country. Linquanyuan is one of the ten temples established by the Shaolin Temple during that time. Linquanyuan was destroyed early in the Qing Dynasty. In 1998, the South Shaolin Temple was rebuilt. In December 2006, the South Shaolin Temple officially accepted management by the abbot of the Guanghua Temple and the two temples became unified under one system. The name "South Shaolin Temple" was officially given to the temple by Mr. Zhao Puchu, then-president of the Chinese Buddhist Association.
