About Qian County

Located in Xianyang City, Shaanxi Province, Qian County is an important area for grain production in the Guanzhong region. Qian County borders Liquan to the east and is quite close to the Liquan county seat. It borders Xingping to the south and Yongshou to the north. The county is famous for the Qianling Mausoleum, where China’s only ever reigning female emperor Wu Zetian (c. 624-705) and her husband Emperor Gaozong of Tang (649-683) are interred. Qian County has a long history and many tourist attractions. There are over 539 ancient cultural sites here and three imperial tombs, and it is the first of Shaanxi's 18 counties listed as major sources of cultural relics. Qian County has many local specialty snacks, popular ones being the “Qianzhou Four Treasures” of guokui bread, guamian (vermicelli), the soft “tofu brain” (doufunao), and the crispy bread chasu.

Cemetery
The Qinling Mausoleum was constructed in the year 684 and is one of the rare places in China - or even the world - where emperors from two dynasties and an imperial husband and wife are interred. Emperor Gaozong of Tang (Li Zhi) and his wife Wu Zetian, China’s only empress, are interred here. This mausoleum is also one of the few imperial tombs in China that has not been looted. The Qinling Mausoleum Scenic Area is quite large. In addition to the Qinling Mausoleum itself, it also contains many “companion tombs” (peizangmu) in which members of the imperial court and major ministers are buried. The tombs of Prince Zhanghuai, Crown Prince Yide, and Princess Yongtai are currently being excavated.

The tomb is located very close to Qianling, the tomb of Emperor Gaozong and Wu Zetian. It is the grandest and highest level Tang Dynasty emperor’s tomb ever excavated to date. The Tomb of Prince Yide is consists of the tomb tunnel, six caverns, seven sky wells, eight houses, the emperor’s path ahead and behind, along with two tomb caverns. The murals in the tomb are very precious, rich in content and color. They fully demonstrate the manner and environment of the Tang Court during its height.
