Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammad Al-Qasimi, chief of Sharjah, has long attached importance to the development of education, Islamic culture and heritage conservation. In 1998, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) awarded Sharjah the title of "the cultural capital of the Arab world" in recognition of its outstanding achievements in the field of culture and education.
