Located at the end of Lambra Street near the port of Barcelona, the Columbus Monument was built in 1886 to welcome the Universal Exposition and commemorate Columbus's global journey. The monument is made of ochre marble, about 60 meters high, and the Columbus statue on it is about 7 meters high enough to overlook the beautiful scenery of Barcelona harbour. In 1493, when Columbus returned with high reputation, Barcelona became the first place to hear Columbus announce the discovery of the New World and the depiction of a strange new world. This also made the monument popular and became one of the symbols of Barcelona. The top of the monument has a viewing platform, visitors can take the elevator inside the monument to climb up the top view. The monument is one of Barcelona's most important attractions. There are many tourists in the square. Near the square is the old harbor, and the scenery is very good.
