The bunker was built to deal with the damage the war might have done to the Golden Gate Bridge, just south of the Golden Gate Bridge, the entrance to San Francisco Bay. Fortunately, the fort was built and the American Civil War broke out, so it played a role in the war. Now, the bunker corner, along with the Golden Gate Bridge, has become a famous attraction in San Francisco.
