A pleasant seaside avenue, located in the heart of Colombo's financial and business district, stretches half a kilometer along the Indian Ocean coast and is a good place to see sunset. At present, it covers an area of 5 hectares and is the largest open space in Colombo. It is a place for local people to jog, walk, fly kites and other leisure and recreational activities. Galefith Greenbelt was pioneered in 1859 by Sir Henry Ward, then Governor of British Ceylon, as a racetrack and golf course, initially much larger than today.
