If it's your first visit to Kathmandu, a visit to Durbar Square is a must despite the hefty entrance fee and damage inflicted on many of the buildings by the earthquake. It is still possible to appreciate the magnificence of the temples, shrines and monuments and many of the stone carvings are still intact. The square still has a bustling atmosphere - its fun to watch small Nepalese children chase pigeons, pilgrims praying at the temples and locals selling vegetables. It's not what it used to be, but the ticket prices support the re-construction and you can't really go to Kathmandu and forgo Durbar Square.
