The second time I saw this place, I knew it would be good. So clear in the wall. This place was recommended by our host (local Istanbul) his favorite place throughout the city and it was incredible. I wanted to change the menu a little (I was excited to try their roasted hamasi which should be a speciality, but their season when we went in July). We had liver, fish cake, grilled salmon, and garlic yogurt with it.

This is one of those crazy meals I am a little sad because I know once I may never taste something like it/good. I fell in love with the plate.

PS host, we recommend booking, I am glad we didn't because this place is all one of us until 8pm. We did it earlier that day but you might call instead. Having some outside help from the service staff, a bit of a language barrier, because we don't speak Turkish.

I don't want to call Cukur Meyhane a hole in the wall is an exaggeration. It's a small restaurant just steps away from Istiklal. There is some smoking, the interior is very simple, it definitely has a place feel. We heard a few people speaking English and the table next to us was a beautiful French-speaking French couple. I think tourists are figuring out how good this place is. We had some fish Italian fins (fish taste amazing cubes), fish cakes and salmon kebabs. We also have some delicious eggplant mud. We don’t want too much room temperature vegetables and beans, but these types of meze are on the menu. I believe you can also buy chicken, beef and lamb. The menu is very good for the price. Beer and wine ($5) is also very reasonable in this area. I think this is probably my favorite dining experience in Turkey. Just good low-key, local food is reasonably priced.

This comment was perfectly justified, because I traveled back to Istanbul with my boyfriend back in 2011 and read a review of the food in Istanbul January 2010 edition, we decided to find this place. That was the hardest part. We went through several times and didn't notice. But once in, everything was excellent and the service was very friendly. The place is small and full of people but you can say everything is fresh. We had a great time and wanted to have dinner in Istanbul for the last time before going home. We went in to find a crowded restaurant, and then the table at the door gave us two seats. The older gentleman seemed to have his own place, or regulars - never found it because of the language. However, we had an amazing dining experience, each dish was better than the previous one. We also enjoyed the local crowd, including a girl celebrating her birthday... After happy birthday we gave her a birthday cake. This is the best way to complete a week's holiday in Istanbul. We highly recommend!

Steps to the basement, furnishings simple spaces and light concepts like regular canteens, slightly shabby...don't be fooled:
You enter the gourmet paradise and the best fish I've ever eaten!
Helpful, good supervisors, even crowded (usually, especially on weekends). Major locals, not to mention how good food will make this visit memorable for you.
Try BBQ Black Sea Anchovies, or hamasi...>I will be back!

I read about meyhanes in Istanbul thinking this place will have some tourists because it is close to the main shopping street. However, it seems very real with some locals as well as some tourists. It is in a dark basement and wine and Mezes is going. They are not just snacks but real food and delicious. Service is good too and the price is reasonable. Recommended!

It was a small gem of a place hidden in the street behind the entrance below a street. We went for a weekend and the location was buzzing.
The salmon roast lamb was the most delicious match I have ever had. It is so fresh you can taste the fish in the sea. The wine is superb and the service is good. We also have chocolate custard the desert is excellent. This is the best meal we have ever had in Istanbul, And not too expensive. Come back next time.
