The sprawling Floresta da Tijuca is one of Rio's finest settings for a hike through tropical rainforest. Waterfalls, grottoes and craggy peaks are all part of the scenery of this massive protected area. The most challenging walk is the ascent up the 1012-meter-high Pico da Tijuca, which offers superb views over forest and ocean. Although you can go on your own (by taxi or hire car), most visitors to the park go on a guided tour, like those offered by Jungle Me (www.jungleme.com.br) or Rio Hiking (www.riohiking.com.br).
Take a tour through the rainforest and enjoy the exotic flora and fauna. It's magical under the canopy of lush trees and if you are quiet and observant you can see so many species, the likes of which you have never laid eyes on before. Hidden waterfalls and bridges make for quite an adventure. Make sure you don't miss the Vista Chinesa while you are up there. And if you're feeling really daring, the tour guides can take you to either the favela for another tour or a hang-gliding experience. Live it up!! There's no other way to do it in Rio!!
