Cool bridge to walk around and check out. Free parking on rsidential areas
Built in 1912, the Spruce Street suspension bridge is a little know footpath in San Diego's Hillcrest neighborhood. Constructed to connect the growing neighborhood to the trolley like across a deep wooded canyon, the bridge, with steel beam and rivet construction, has the same historic look as the Golden Gate. Practically downtown and just west of Balboa Park, it's a great detour if just visiting town. The deck, which is wooden planks held up by massive steel cables, sways with each step. It is usually empty except for the occasional dog walker, and offers great vistas of downtown. It is two blocks west of First Ave. on Spruce Street.
I spent a night at the Inn by the Park hotel near the Spruce Street suspension bridge, and went over to visit one evening. There was a lot of drug trafficking going on around the bridge.Police were patrolling the area for drugs-activity, and gave citations to several people. I wouldn't recommend visiting the bridge if safety is your concern.. Gang activity and drug trafficking at this bridge is rife. Not worth the risk.
