The white stone lighthouse was first illuminated on February 15, 1875. The lighthouse was originally 30 meters high, but earthquakes over the years damaged the structure of the lighthouse. The 1948 earthquake caused the final damage and the upper three floors were removed. Now the truncated lighthouse is about 21 meters high. The lighthouse was automated in 1975, flashing every 10 seconds, and continues to serve as a navigation aid. In 2001, the lighthouse was managed as a historic park and wildlife refuge. It became a monument to coastal California in 2017.
