Many people choose Sapporo for the first stop of the Hokkaido tour. The most flavorful season is January and February. The ice and snow festival gives the city a unique atmosphere. The Datong Park is full of lights and the snow sculptures are beautiful. There are also European-style buildings such as the old hall and the bell tower, which are worth your stop.
Sapporo White Lighting Festival
several times to Sapporo are in a hurry, only occasionally pass through Odori Park while driving. This famous park is a strip of green space, 1.5 kilometers long, and often hosts various events. In December, on a snowy night, it was attracted by the brilliant lights and came to the Sapporo TV Tower. The tower overlooked the whole scene of Datong Park.
The popular Sapporo Snow Festival is held in February, and at the end of November, there is a white lighting festival, with 520,000 lights hanging, the trees are decorated with colorful lights, and the specially designed shape is Dreamy, the lights will continue until midnight at Christmas.
Sapporo Snow Festival is a must visit during winter in February at Odori Park. You can see many snow sculptures here from building, Doraemon, Pokemon and many more. We arrived on the last weekend of the festival so it was very busy and some the smaller sculptures had started to melt but the scale was impressive. Best in my mind was the Helsinki Cathedral and the JR display which used video onto the sculpture to make it look like it was moving. Huge variety of food and drink available all around the festival and also live music on a couple of stages. We spent an hour watching a popular local band who had all their fans dancing in sync.
