The fortifications of the ancient city are some of the largest, oldest and best preserved in all of China. Dating back to the Ming and Qing dynasties the wall encased an area of around 14 square kilometres - so get ready for some serious exercise! We hired bicycles on the top of the wall and spent the evening exploring the various structures atop it as well as the glittering views of the city. Once coming down, make sure to take the quick walk to the Drum tower (third photo) for another beautiful view.

I’ve been here during December 2019, tryna catch the winter season and snowfall. Unlucky, i didn’t manage to stay until the first snowfall as I was there too early. Anyway, the trip somehow remains unforgettable. It’s a 2 weeks vacation. I supposed everything ws great. As a muslim, getting halal foods is one of the most crucial element while travelling. Surprisingly, it’s easy to manage as Xi’an kinda have a big number if muslim population. Weather were great, gorgeous scenery, lotsa history place to visit, safe to walk around. Walking this well preserved city wall feels like you have time traveled to 14th century China! The Fortifications of Xi’an (commonly known as Xi’an City Wall) are impeccably maintained and preserved. The city wall is a family friendly historical site that is a must see if you travel to Xi’an! You can stroll along the wall by foot or you can opt to rent a bicycle and cruise along the fortifications! The entire length of the wall is 14km so exploring by bike is a popular choice! There are many watchtowers, tunnels, battlements and gates to see! You can spend an entire day on the city wall and not see everything! The lower level of the wall has a few quaint cafes to grab a bite to eat and if you are lucky you may catch a glimpse of an historical re enactment! #staycation #china #createwithtrip

Xi’an has a fair share of scenic spots to visit when you go but none more recommended than the City Wall. I stayed in the Ibis Hotel at Drum Tower so it was around 15 minutes to walk down to the city wall entrance. Most people opt to use a bike while on the wall as it’s a fascinating ride around the whole city. Tickets are purchased before you enter, and while it tells you to purchase beforehand, you can just use WeChat to buy as you get there. I was recommended to visit at dusk as you can see the wall and the view as the sunsets and I would equally recommend this time too. The wall isn’t as busy at this time as it’s typically dinner time for many Chinese and the suns heat is still there should you be visiting in the Summer like me. Xi'an City Wall is also known as Fortification of Xi'an. It is a massive compound scaling around 13.7 kilometre and stands 12 metre high in the middle of the Xi'an City. Regarded as one of the largest ancient military defensive system in the world, it was built during the Ming Dynasty (1370). It has four main gates; East Gate (Changle Gate), West Gate (Anding Gate), South Gate (Yongning Gate), North Gate (Anyuan Gate). We went through the Yongning Gate as it is the most decorated one. Visitors are able to walk along the wall and enjoy its inner and outer walls, watchtowers, moat, and landscape from an elevated view. While we opted for cycling around the wall because the place was huge and we were all tired by the walking. we stayed until night to witness the lights on lanterns. we loved the place so much #xian #xiancitywall #china

📍Xi’an Xi’an city wall, also known as the fortifications of Xi’an, is the most complete city wall that has survived in China, also one of the largest ancient military defensive systems in the world. My tour guide, mr. Li, told me that Xi’an City Wall was 13,6 km. It had 4 gates, Changle Gate, Anding Gate, Yongning Gate, and Anyuan Gate. I was walking around, taking pictures and just sight-seeing. I didn’t want to ride the bike because it was too cold. I came from the south gate or Yongning Gate. Because not all the gates are opened for tourists.

Upon visiting Xi'an, one cannot help but mention the Xi'an City Wall, the best-preserved ancient city wall in China, bar none. Built on the foundation of the Tang Dynasty imperial city, it was expanded in the early Ming Dynasty and has undergone numerous restorations during the Qing Dynasty, the Republic of China, and the post-establishment of the People's Republic of China. Today, it stands as a testament to over 600 years of history, exuding an aura of solemnity and grandeur. In fact, until the Republic of China era, the Xi'an City Wall served a crucial role in military defense. After the establishment of the People's Republic, the renovated wall regained its ancient charm and welcomed a new lease of life, becoming a popular tourist attraction for visitors from home and abroad to experience the ancient Chinese civilization. The main city wall of Xi'an has four gates: the South Gate, known as Yongning Gate, symbolizing eternal peace; the North Gate, known as Anyuan Gate, signifying peace in the distant Western Regions; the West Gate, known as Anding Gate, and the East Gate, known as Changle Gate, both representing harmony. These four gates are the original gates of the ancient city wall. Since the Republic of China era, for the convenience of entering and exiting the ancient city, several new gates have been opened, and to date, there are 18 gates on the Xi'an City Wall. It is recommended to ascend the city wall from the South Gate (also known as Yongning Gate). As ancient architecture often adheres to the principle of facing south, the South Gate is the most majestic and well-preserved gate, with its gatehouse, arrow tower, and main building all intact. On my visit to the Xi'an City Wall, I started from the North Gate as I was staying nearby. Renting a bicycle allowed me to freely explore the wall, although the uneven surface made the ride somewhat bumpy. There are eight points of ascent to the Xi'an City Wall: East Gate (Changle Gate), South Gate (Yongning Gate), West Gate (Anding Gate), North Gate (Anyuan Gate), Peace Gate, Wenchang Gate, Hanguang Gate, and Shangde Gate.
