About The Bund

Arguably Shanghai's most-famous tourist attraction, the Bund is a waterfront promenade and famous business district in central Shanghai. Historically, the Bund was the city’s main financial and trading center, and was located within the Shanghai International Settlement, an area under nominal British control between 1843 and 1941. The walking areas extend roughly 1.6 km along the west bank of the Huangpu River. Owing to its historic status and zoning restrictions, the Bund contains fantastic examples of classic Shanghai architecture. For this reason, it is a popular spot for photography, offering the best views across the river to Shanghai’s modern skyline in Lujiazui. No visit to Shanghai would be complete without a visit to the Bund.

Getting Around

By subway: Take subway line 2, or line 10 to East Nanjing Road, then walk toward the Bund district. There are two ways to travel between the Bund and Pudong: first, by ferry or by the sightseeing pedestrian tunnel. The ferry goes back and forth between DongChang Road Ferry Port, and the Nanjing East Road Ferry Port. At the FuXing East Road Ferry Port, the sightseeing tunnel is a pedestrian tunnel across the river between the Bund of Nanjing East Road and the Oriental Pearl.

Helpful Information

The bund is not far from another two tourist attractions, the Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street and Shanghai People's Square. Many tourists choose to go on walking tours starting from People's Square and through to Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street, onward to the Bund. The wind on the Bund is strong, especially during the winter and during nights of spring and autumn. Visitors are encouraged to dress for the weather with thick windproof clothing for the winds on the Bund. The main photography spots and main attractions of the Bund are generally concentrated on the northern section (along Zhongshan East 1 Road from North of Nanjing East Road to WaiBaiDu Bridge). If your time to visit the Bund is short, touring the area on the Northern side of the River is generally recommended to get the most out of your time and the attractions of the area.

Special Events

The Bund is an old town style pedestrian area located in the Shanghai city center at the west bank of the Huang Pu River. This area is said to be one of the iconic attractions of Shanghai. The classic revival architecture from various nations is located along one side of the Bund at the riverfront. The Huang Pu is the largest and most central river of Shanghai. The financial district of Shanghai, LuJiaZui is located directly across the river from the Bund. After dark in the summer, neon lights on both sides of the river set the atmosphere for the entire area. During warm weather in Shanghai, the wind off the river and the many sidewalks make this an ideal location for a romantic walk.
