The four-story building, built in 1918, was a French Renaissance architectural style and was called "new school building" at the time. Xuhui Middle School, founded in Qingdao Guang 30 years (1850). Daoguang 29 years (1849), flooded in the Jiangnan area, many difficult children came to Xujiahui, Xujiahui local residents were unable to feed, so they sent the difficult children to Xujiahui Catholic Church, asking Xujiahui Siqi to find ways to receive and educate. The priests saw that they could teach, and Jude, then the dean of the Jesuits of Xu Jiahui, promised to dial up the number of huts to fill the classroom. In 1850, the number of apprentices increased to 31, and all excellent teaching, so a temporary shelter for organized teaching, the establishment of a school, named Xuhui Public School, thus forming the prototype of Xuhui Public School. Qingguangxu four years (1878), due to the stable situation, students surged, the old school building is not enough to apply, decided to build a three-story building, then the first floor, that is, the old school building (which was converted into Shangxue Building in 1991). The second floor of the West School Building (which was converted into a Heavy De Building in 1991) was built, with the upper floor as the faculty dormitory and the lower floor as the classroom. In 1905, the school promoted sports and opened a new playground, which is now the big playground. In February 1904, due to the rapid increase of foreign students, the school set up the upper, middle and lower hospitals, and implemented the management of the branch hospitals. The upper and lower hospitals teach endogenous students, and the middle schools teach foreign students. The upper hospitals have religious activities to cultivate their body and mind; the foreign students also organize lectures and then change to the "rules and encourage society". The school thus implements a level of religious education and school culture education. After graduation, students are sent to the Institute of Zhendan or the University of Foreign Affairs for further study. This is the first church school founded by French Catholics in China. The past year, mostly French and Italian priests, the internal organization of the school and its management methods, in addition to the style of the Jesuit school, but also with a strong French and Italian education system, which is different from the domestic schools at that time.
