What people are saying:

Go to Tianping Mountain to enjoy the oysters, and stop by to Mudu Ancient Town. The ancient town is located in the southwest of the western suburb of Suzhou, near the mountains and waters, with a unique Jiangnan ancient town charm. There are Yanjia Garden, Gusong Garden... It is said that it is a must-see place in the south of the Yangtze River. We enjoyed walking around the old town.

    Another water town

Quite commercial and nothing out of the ordinary. It’s another water town with the usual shops and eating places. It’s quite quiet and some interesting sites but really nothing too special

We found out this water town by mistake. We were booked into a hotel way out of the city centre. Our friends told us we were near this town. They had never been there. On arrival 10.45am wandered arou...

Not quite what I imagine but worth a visit

The best bit to this place was the cost of the bus ride from Central Suzhou to Mudu- ¥1- wow & the beautiful fish in one of the gardens- unfortunately can’t remember the name of it. Mudu wasn’t quite...

    “Ancient Town”

This place is so old. I enjoy seeing the old houses. Even went up to the back part of the town where only locals live. Is so nice to see the old structures.

Additional Information

The history of Mudu Ancient Town is as old as the ancient city of Suzhou itself. The Qing Dynasty Yanjia Garden (Guanyuan) in the ancient town has been used for more than 400 years, which sufficiently explains its "tall, large and superior" status. There is a big stage in the Hongyin Mountain House. Every time the Emperor Qianlong visited Jiangnan, he would come here to watch the theater. There are twenty emperorial edicts in the house. The Xiaoyin Garden of the Rainbow Drinking Mountain House is the former residence of the "Embroiderer Empress" Shen Shou. Inside the Gusong Garden from the Qing Dynasty, the carvings in the hall are exceedingly beautiful. There is a 500-year-old Podocarpus in the back garden. The Yao Jianping Embroidery Art Museum on the west side of the back garden is also worth visiting.
