The Swiss territory is a Celtic activity area in prehistoric times. The Celts used to be indigenous people in central Europe. Their tribes expanded to France, Belgium, northern Italy, Spain and the Rhine in the 2nd century BC. The vast extent of the basin has also successfully captured the city of Rome during their heyday. Inhabited today in the Swiss territory are the Celtic Helvetia and the Reto tribe.
