What people are saying:

While wandering in Hyde Park, we stumbled upon the Australia New Zealand War Memorial. From a distance, we found this building very interesting, so we went closer to see what it was. When we walked through the reflection pool in front and walked up the steps, a friendly person showed up to greet us. He asked us if it was our first visit and offered to introduce us some information about this place. He is very nice, I guess he is a volunteer, maybe a veteran. He told us the history of this place, including the old and new areas and who is responsible for each area. He explained the different areas of the memorial hall and the beautiful statues decorated in the center of the building. We didn't have time to feel here, because we had to meet with friends from overseas nearby. So we will come here again in the future, spend some quiet time and fully experience everything here.

Additional Information

Introduction

Australia is better known for its curiously cute marsupial population and unsullied beaches than its wartime heritage, but the Anzac War Memorial in Sydney is a startling reminder of the countrymen who have served the country’s interests during times of war. The Art Deco memorial was completed in 1934, designed by 32-year-old Sydney architect Bruce Dellit. Unlike many memorials, Anzac combines quiet, contemplative spaces with functional offices that house organizations assisting returned soldiers. Exterior sculptures by Rayner Hoff depict grieving heroes from Australia’s Great War dressed in modern military uniforms. A flame donated by the Australian Gas Light Company burns in perpetuity in the designated Flame Room, symbolizing Australian men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice.
