The friendly ancient lions keep watch over the Arsenale and for gatti lovers this is a dreamy spot, a corner spot to sit outside and people watch. It's off the beaten path and for the most part quiet. On cold winter days you can sit inside. At Carnival it's a place for professional photographers to photograph costumed Carnival goers. The bar is tiny, they play great music and the pannini and tramezzini (triangle cut sandwiches on white bread with tuna and olive or tiny shrimp and egg and mayonnaise) are really good and some of the best in Castello. The coffees and spritz very good. The owners are serious and need a little encouragement to smile and warm up to you but they are friendly. It's cash only. We never miss an opportunity to have a light lunch there. It's a great little neighborhood bar.
We found this place on our first visit to Venice and always return when we are here. Situated next to the entrance to the old naval arsenal it is in a relatively quiet area of Venice and the prices reflect that, with a strong regular local trade it is a great place to relax and enjoy one of their fresh cakes, freshly made sandwiches and other reasonably priced snacks, obviously they serve the usual variety of coffees, soft drinks and alcohol. The service is prompt and friendly and extremely polite and they are always ready to offer help with directions, the toilets are also kept extremely clean. It is well worth the short walk to find this place and also see the Arsenale which is one of Venices less viewed buildings but which is just as important in Venices history.
