La Cupola is the restaurant connected to the Hotel Carlton on the Grand Canal, which is where we were staying whilst in Venice. Thanks to me vastly underestimating just how long it takes a water taxi to get from the airport to the Grand Canal, we had arrived at the hotel with barely enough time to get changed for our night out at the opera, never mind sit down for a good meal. We discovered that the restaurant didn't open until 7pm. However, the hotel staff told us to go there anyway and they'd let us in early. We were shown to our table by the head waiter, Dario. We explained our situation, that we were in a real hurry and could he recommend anything that would be quick to cook. He went off to the kitchen and came back a couple of minutes later with a selection of four pasta dishes that would take no more than 15 minutes to cook. We asked if it was okay that we were ordering early and he assured us that, because we were in such a rush, he'd ask the kitchen to do our meals first. And sure enough, by five past seven, just fourteen minutes after ordering, we were tucking in to our meals! They were very nice, although in the rush we didn't really get to enjoy them properly. We thanked Dario for his help, then promised him we'd be back the next night to have a proper meal. The next night, we did it properly. Starter, main course, dessert, coffee, wine, the whole nine yards. We were given an amuse bouche of octopus, which was delicious, as was everything else. It wasn't cheap - over €160 - but it did finish off our trip to Venice in style. I'm really hard pushed to fault this restaurant. It's fairly small, but has a nice ambiance to it. It's expensive, but then again so is everywhere else in Venice. For what we paid, I expected good food, great wine and excellent service, which is precisely what we got. Overall, I was very pleased with this restaurant and I'd eat there again.
