I had been once to Lale several years ago, and was not impressed with the food or even the ambiance inside and never returned to it thereafter. However the restaurant had recently been refurbished, and I went there with a friend for the first time to try it out after it had been renovated. It has a seating area in front of the restaurant on the patio, which is perfect for people watching, and is situated near the metro stop 'Schwedenplatz' (on the metro lines U1 and U4). I was a bit apprehensive about the restaurant taking into account several reviews on tripadvisor regarding the unfriendly service. When we entered we were greeted by one waiter, but there was one particular waiter who tried to rush us to sit somewhere and he was very curt which was not appreciated at all. He asked us without greeting whether we had a reservation, and we said we did, with a hand gesture he just asked that we sit at a particular table whilst walking away. That obviously confirmed what we had read in the reviews, and this is something that should be addressed since it is not a pleasant way to be treated when first entering a restaurant. Luckily for us, a waitress took care of us the entire evening, and unlike the rest, she was pleasant and even spoke in English. Our initial impressions was that it had indeed transformed into a much nicer restaurant with a nicer and warmer ambiance to it. We decided to try a selection of starters - we had hummous, sigara borek (puff pastry cigars with cheese) and shakshuka. This was served with warm pita bread and flat bread. The hummous was your typical run of the mill hummous, but the sigara borek and shakshuka was quite good. For the mains we ordered 'islim kebabi' which are lamb kebabs wrapped in aubergine and skewered with a toothprick with onion and long peppers.
