You will rarely find a lighthouse far from the coast. The structure began in the clock tower in 1857, when the governor's wife was frustrated by the poor quality of timekeeping. The lighthouse was added ten years later. It is the main lighthouse in Colombo and has been around for about 100 years until the surrounding buildings reduced its use for new purposes. It is located at the intersection of Chatham Street and Janadhipathi Mawatha in the Fort area. The height is 29m. The lighthouse was decommissioned in 1952.
