About Lincoln Memorial

The Lincoln Memorial is an American national monument built to honor the 16th President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln. It is located at the western end of the National Mall, across from the Washington Monument. The building is in the form of a Greek Doric temple and contains a large seated sculpture of Abraham Lincoln and inscriptions of two well-known speeches by Lincoln, "The Gettysburg Address" and his Second Inaugural Address. The Lincoln Memorial has been the site of many famous speeches, including Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech, delivered on August 28, 1963. Abraham Lincoln is widely regarded as America's greatest president and the monument in his memory is an important public gathering place and national symbol.

Helpful Information

From 9:30 am to 10:00 pm, staff of the memorial hall is available to explain and answer questions for tourists. To take a panoramic photo of this memorial, you can go to the National World War II Memorial on the other side of the Reflection Pool and turn towards the Lincoln Memorial. There are fewer tourists in the mornings and early evenings, if your plans coincide, it is highly recommended to travel to the monument at these times.

Special Events

This is the official memorial built for U.S. 16th President Lincoln. The building is built in a classical Greek temple architectural style. The entire structure is made of white marble, with a full carved statue of Lincoln in the main viewing hall. The monument is respected as sacred and solemn. In the center of the memorial hall is Lincoln's portrait with an inscription on the back, which states; "In this temple, as in the hearts of the people for whom he saved the union, the memory of Abraham Lincoln is enshrined forever.” In front of the Lincoln Memorial is the famous "Reflecting Pool", which reflects the full image of the Washington Monument when standing at the level of the Lincoln main room.
