What people are saying:

The U.S. Capitol is located on the 25-meter-high Capitol Hill in the District of Columbia, Washington. Americans regard it as the supreme symbol of ownership, governance by the people, and government for the people. The US Capitol was laid by President Washington himself and was built in 1793. However, the US Capitol, like other buildings in Washington, was not immune to the destruction of the war. After refurbishment, the U.S. Capitol is still standing there intact, with the addition of a dome, two chambers meeting rooms, and a rotunda.

Additional Information

Introduction

The United States Capitol is the home of the United States Congress and the seat of the legislative branch of the US federal government. It is located on Capitol Hill at the eastern end of the National Mall in Washington, D.C. The original building was completed in 1800 and subsequently expanded. Chambers for the bicameral legislature are located in each of the building's wing, the House of Representatives occupies the south wing and the Senate occupies the north wing. Like the principal buildings of the executive and judicial branches, the Capitol is built in a distinctive neoclassical style and has a white exterior. Tours of the interior are possible; however, these are best arranged by contacting individual members of Congress who consider tours part of their constituent services.
