Tatsuya in West Ryde is not to be confused with the award-winning Tetsuya's in downtown Sydney. Very different kettles of fish. For starters, it is not housed in a heritage-listed sandstone mansion but a modest corner cottage, squeezed between a car wash/service station on one-side and residential bungalows on the other. It's menu is also less about fusion and more about traditional Japanese dishes, and its prices are far from astronomical. As the premises are quite small, it gets busy early (at least for lunch). Get there early is the take-home message. It is all good here: the sushi/sashimi platters are outstanding, and they also do an excellent oysters platter. Tempura and katsu dishes (the latter include with salad and rice) also first-rate. Miso comes free. Prices are very reasonable. The only reason I am giving the place 'Very good' rather than 'Excellent' is that the table service can be found wanting ... that's if it can be found at all. It can very hard to catch the eye of one of the waitresses.
