About Wuzhou

Wuzhou is known for its ancient history that dates back over 2000 years. It was inhabited by the Baiyue people during the Qin dynasty and was previously known as Guangxin and Cangwu. The area is known for its beautiful natural scenery. Major attractions include Tong lau architecture (early 20th Century buildings with Chinese and European architectural features), the Dragon Mother Temple which dates from the Song, Ming and Qing dynasties, the Sun Yat-Sen Memorial, the Yuanyang River, Baiyunshan Park, Yusi'en Temple, and the former residence of the military commander Li Jishen.

In Hedong Old Town, Wuzhou, there is a dense concentration of large, well-preserved antique Qilou Buildings (also known as arcade-houses). There are many historical relics in this location, such as the old Dadong Post Office on Dadongshang Road. The beautiful homes, courtyards and exquisite carvings on Minzhu Road are worth a visit, as is the catholic church there, which dates back to 1898.

The Dragon Mother was a female leader of the southern Baiyue nationality during the Warring States Period. The Dragon Mother, who is said to be the mother of the descendants of the dragon was widely venerated. Wuzhou is the Dragon Mother’s hometown. In order to commemorate her, during the Song dynasty the temple was built on the banks of Guijiang River just north of the city. Nowadays, it has become one of the most famous tourist spots in Wuzhou and even in southeast Guangxi. The temple features a brilliant exterior. It was rebuilt several times during the reign of Wanli of the Ming dynasty and the reign of Kangxi and Yongzheng of the Qing dynasty and is well worth a visit.

Baiyun Mountain is 150 meters (492 feet) northeast of the intersection of Guilin Road and Baiyun Road in Wanxiu District, Wuzhou City. Adjacent to Longmu Temple Scenic Area, the peak is only 386 meters (1102 feet) high, an accessible place where people from Wuzhou like to go on weekends. The air here is fresh, and there are many historical sites, such as the Si'en Temple. There is a panoramic view of Wuzhou from the top of Baiyun Mountain.
